About me
My work draws inspiration from two key influences: my background in graphic design and the time I spent with my grandparents as a child. My grandfather worked at Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum, where I was mesmerised by the geode displays in the ‘rock room’. I spent countless hours staring at the precious crystal formations, wondering how I could capture their beauty to gaze at forever.
My grandmother also had a big influence on me; she was stylish and confident, and showed me that how you present yourself can change the way you feel inside. For me, jewellery is that finishing touch that helps me feel my best.
My background in graphic design naturally pulls me toward bold shapes and clean lines, but recently my designs are inspired by the natural world, often taking a playful, abstract turn. I explore repetition in shape and form, forging and assembling elements in new and unexpected ways to create something truly original but always wearable.
I work with recycled silver, gold, and colourful gemstones, making everything by hand in my Leicestershire studio. I use a mixture of techniques - traditional silversmithing, sand casting, 3D design, and stone setting - to bring my ideas to life.
More about my processes
Sand casting
Some of my jewellery is made with the sand casting technique, and I either hand carve a wax model or draw up a design in CAD before casting it in silver or gold. It's not for the faint-hearted as it involves heating metal to a super hot temperature and hand-pouring it into a sand mould. I love the process, and how immediate it is compared to lost wax casting, because I can do the casting myself without having to send it out to a specialist. It does need a lot of clean up but the result is a little more ‘handmade’ and a little less perfect, which I love.
Sand casting has been used for around 5,000 years, and I'm totally fascinated that such an ancient method is still being used today.
One-of-a-kind
I also create hand crafted, one-of-a-kind jewellery using traditional bench skills. Much of my pleasure in this process comes from sourcing the gorgeous gemstones for these unique pieces. Though I’ve probably got more stones than I have time to create pieces for! And I like to keep as much in-house as possible so I also do my own stone setting.
